    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2012 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Leonard Joseph "Buck" Schmalz, 89, who died November 27, 2012 at Lafayette General Hospital.
    Fr. Matthew Higginbotham, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will be officiating for the services. The family is requesting visiting hours to be held Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to the time of service. A rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus 5499 at 7 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
    Mr. Schmalz proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 15, V.F.W. Post 6720, and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus 5499. Mr. Schmalz was a board member of the Council on Aging, and the Golden Age.
    He is survived by two sons, Bill Schmaltz and his wife, Roberta of Crowley, and Charles Schmaltz and his wife, Helen of Roberts Cove; five grandchildren, Chuck Schmaltz and his wife, Kylie of Estherwood, Hollie Lee and her husband, Justin of Crowley, Gretchen Schmaltz of Houston, TX, Jason Schmaltz and his wife, Katie of Branch; and Olivia Schmaltz of Lake Charles; five great-grandchildren, Norma DeDear, Gabe Schmaltz, Ella Schmaltz, Jackson Lee, and Greta Schmaltz; two sisters, Olivia Fratesi of Quitman, AR, and Agnes Seibenmorgan of Conway, AR; and one brother, Gerhart Schmalz of Paris, AR.
    Mr. Schmalz is preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Marie Moore Schmalz; one daughter, Victoria Clara Schmaltz; his parents, Joseph and Clara Komp Schmalz; and three brothers, Raymond, Eugene, and William Schmalz.


Leonard married Fannie Marie MOORE, daughter of Felix Sidney MOORE and Victoria Clara LABAUVE, on May 25, 1947 in St. Michael's Church, Crowley, Louisiana.
